INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION @TIOMAN 2024

The organizer of this program is the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Also involved International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre (ISTIC-UNESCO), Malaysian Association of Analytical Sciences (ANALIS), Department of Chemistry Malaysia (Headquarters) as a strategic partner. It will also involve several strategic partners from within and outside the country. Activities will be held both online and in person from June to September  2024, at Kg Tekek Beach and Monkey Bay, Tioman Island, Kuala Rompin, Pahang.

Background

Significant long-term climate change in global temperatures and weather patterns is largely caused by human activity. It occurs due to the increase of greenhouse gases that have the ability to trap heat and cause the average temperature of the earth to rise. Efforts to reduce the effects of climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in various ways, including reducing garbage that releases methane gas into the atmosphere.

Various activities have been planned such as climate change awareness among school students through Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) activities, beach cleaning to reduce plastic waste pollution, deep sea cleaning by collecting crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS). which is a predator to coral polyps and exhibits from Jabatan Maritim  and Jabatan Kimia Malaysia at Sekolah Menengah Tekek.

The results of these activities will inspire individuals and communities to adopt more sustainable practices and support policies that address waste management and environmental conservation, which can have a wider impact in reducing climate change.

The program organized by the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) sees the interweaving of collaboration in achieving results that have a positive impact in making the ICCA@Tioman 2024 program a success. Among the participating agencies are private companies, local councils, Non Government Organizations (NGOs), communities, schools, universities, as well as local and international volunteers.
